The NINE ESRC Doctoral Training Partnership funds PhD studentships in the social sciences across seven universities: Durham, Newcastle, Northumbria, Teesside, Sunderland, Ulster and Queen's University Belfast.

How to apply
- Apply for a PhD directly at one of the seven partner universities
- Work with your proposed supervisor to prepare the project
- Your supervisor submits a Stage 1 nomination through the NINE nomination portal
- Successful Stage 1 nominees go on to the Stage 2 panel competition
Deadline: Stage 1 closes 27 October 2026 at 4pm UK time. Supervisor approval forms must be in by then; referee letters can follow later. Start early: finding a supervisor takes time.
