About this opportunity
Chevening and the British Library are funding one researcher to spend a year in London working on the Library's Coptic manuscript collections — cataloguing, provenance research and engagement with Coptic heritage communities.
What it covers. Living expenses for the full twelve months (September 2027 to September 2028), return economy airfare, an allowance package for fellowship activities and up to £1,000 for approved project costs. You are hosted by the Head of Asian and African Studies at the British Library.
Who can apply. Citizens of and normally resident in Egypt, Palestine or Sudan. Applicants who are currently in other eligible Middle East and North Africa countries — Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Syria, Tunisia or Yemen — may also apply.
Cameroon is not on the eligible list for this fellowship. Chevening's main scholarship scheme is a separate call with its own country list, so if you are applying from Cameroon look at that instead.
What Chevening asks for. A postgraduate-level qualification or equivalent professional training, at least five years of professional or academic research experience, current employment or PhD candidacy at a university outside the UK, EU and USA, excellent knowledge of Coptic (Sahidic or Bohairic) — Arabic and Greek are useful — and experience of cataloguing and handling manuscript collections, provenance research, or heritage community work.
