About this opportunity
The Gulbenkian Institute for Advanced Study brings a small cohort to Lisbon each year to work on their own research, in a building designed for conversation across disciplines.
What you get. A monthly stipend (set individually, not a fixed rate), travel expenses, family health insurance, a partial housing allowance and your own office, plus seminar rooms, electronic resources, campus dining and university library access. GIAS will help you find somewhere to live and schools for accompanying children, but does not house you directly.
How long. Preferably eight months, 15 September to 15 May. Shorter residencies from three months are considered.
Who can apply. There are no nationality restrictions and you do not need Portuguese. Active academics, emeriti, independent scholars and arts practitioners are all eligible; most fellows hold a PhD but it is not required. GIAS deliberately mixes established names with younger researchers. Fields that need laboratory facilities, or that are primarily practice-oriented, are out of scope — almost everything else is in.
What you send. A proposal of no more than three pages covering the themes, context and objectives of your project, with a CV.
Dates. Applications run 1 July to 15 October 2026. Decisions reach most candidates by early February, and the final fellowship list is published by 15 April 2027.
The countdown shows London time because Togeva does not carry a Lisbon zone; the two run on the same clock, so 23:59 here is 23:59 in Lisbon.
