HKU Presidential PhD Scholar Programme 2027/28

The HKU Presidential PhD Scholar Programme is the University of Hong Kong's most generous PhD award. Every full-time PhD applicant is considered automatically, and there is no nationality restriction, so African applicants are eligible.

What you get (2027/28)

• HK$28,700 a month postgraduate scholarship
• HK$14,400 a year conference and research travel allowance
• Composition fee waiver (HK$49,500 a year)
• Cash award: HK$40,000 in year 1 and HK$20,000 in each later year
• Guaranteed hall accommodation in year 1
• In total, up to about HK$445,800 (US$57,150) in the first year

How to apply Apply for a full-time PhD programme at HKU through the university's online application system during the Main Round (1 September to 1 December 2026). There is no separate form. Shortlisted candidates may be invited for interview. HKU also recommends applying to the Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme at the same time.

Deadline: 1 December 2026, 23:59 Hong Kong time (15:59 UTC). HKU accepts PhD applications year-round, but strongly advises the Main Round because places are limited, and some departments start reviewing before the deadline, so apply early.
