About this opportunity

LawAI pays researchers to spend a summer in Washington D.C. working on the legal questions around frontier AI — liability, regulatory authority, international governance, and how existing US law applies to systems it was never written for.

Pay. $2,000 a week across the ten weeks, more for exceptional candidates. Fellows relocating to D.C. also get a $10,000 relocation and housing stipend. Travel and meals are covered for Convening Week and the Summer Institute.

Dates. 14 June to 20 August 2027, with a mandatory Convening Week from 21 to 25 June.

Who can apply. You need to show an understanding of the legal principles behind US AI regulation, through formal legal study or professional experience. No nationality restriction is stated, and LawAI says visa sponsorship is available, contingent on valid immigration permissions — which makes this unusually reachable from outside the US compared with most D.C. fellowships. They strongly prefer in-person participation but will consider remote arrangements case by case.

Deadline. 29 January 2027 at 11:59 p.m. Eastern — 5:59 a.m. on 30 January in Cameroon. Applications go through LawAI's Airtable form, linked from the fellowship page.

If you are a law student or lawyer anywhere who has been reading about AI policy and wondering how to get into it, this is one of the few paid, structured entry points.
