About this opportunity
Yale Young African Scholars (YYAS) is Yale University's leadership and college-preparation programme for talented secondary school students across Africa. It is not a degree scholarship: it is a short, intensive programme that helps you prepare for university and for applying to top universities.
Cost Yale states there is no tuition cost: YYAS is free for all admitted students.
Who can apply
- Citizens or permanent residents of an African country who attend school there (refugees living in African countries also qualify)
- Aged 14 to 18 on 15 July 2027 (most participants are 16–17)
- In 10th or 11th grade or the equivalent (in Cameroon, roughly Form 4/5 to Lower Sixth), graduating from secondary school between 2027 and 2029 depending on your hemisphere
- Students in their final year, already graduated or already at university are not eligible, nor are YYAS alumni
- Good English: the curriculum is taught in English
How to apply Complete the online application and give contact details for three references: a parent or guardian, a teacher and a school official. You get a confirmation email within 24–48 hours.
Deadlines (11:59 pm US Eastern time)
- Early Action: 20 October 2026 (decisions 18 December 2026)
- Regular Decision: 20 January 2027 (decisions 20 March 2027)
