MEXT University Recommendation Scholarship at APU, Japan — September 2027 Entry

Under Japan's MEXT University Recommendation (UR) scheme, Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University (APU) in Beppu selects strong graduate applicants and recommends them to Japan's Ministry of Education (MEXT) for a full government scholarship. It covers master's and doctoral programmes starting September 2027.

What it covers

• Admission fee and full tuition
• ¥144,000 per month for living costs, including housing (subject to change)
• Economy return airfare between your home country and APU

Who can apply

• Nationals of a MEXT-designated country — 128 countries, including Cameroon and all 48 Sub-Saharan African countries listed by APU (also much of Asia, the Middle East and North Africa, Latin America, Central & Eastern Europe and the CIS)
• Born on or after 2 April 1992
• GPA of at least 2.30 on a 3.00 scale at your most recent university
• You must intend to come to Japan from overseas and hold a Student visa
• Not active military personnel or military civilian staff
• Past MEXT scholars are generally not eligible unless more than three years have passed since their award ended
• English proficiency test taken on or after 15 March 2025

How it works

1. Apply to an APU graduate programme through APU's online application form
2. APU selects candidates to recommend to MEXT and tells you with your admission result
3. MEXT makes final decisions by the end of June 2027

Deadline

5 November 2026. APU's page gives no time of day — we show the end of the day in Japan (23:59 JST, shown as 14:59 UTC). Submit well before.

APU warns that 2027 conditions may change — re-check its page and the MEXT AY2027 notice before applying.
