Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme 2027/28

The Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme is run by Hong Kong's Research Grants Council and awards about 400 fellowships each year to new full-time PhD students at Hong Kong's eight publicly funded universities. It is open to applicants of any nationality, Cameroon included.

Deadline: 1 December 2026, 12:00 noon Hong Kong time (04:00 UTC). The round opened on 1 September 2026.

What you get

• A stipend of HK$344,400 a year — about USD 44,150 — for up to three years
• HK$14,400 a year (about USD 1,840) for conference and research travel
• Most host universities add further tuition and accommodation support of their own

How it works — two steps, both needed

1. Submit an initial application through the RGC's electronic system and get a reference number, before the 1 December deadline.
2. Use that reference number to apply for PhD admission directly to each university you want to be considered by. Each university sets its own admission requirements and closing date, so check them early — you may apply to more than one.

• Anyone seeking a first-time, full-time PhD place in Hong Kong
• Strong academic record, research ability, communication skills and leadership potential are what the RGC says it looks for
• English is the medium of instruction at all eight universities
